Lists

Today, I am taking MG and going to see my neurologist. I can tell that I am doing better and I am eager to see Dr. K to get his official report. I have made a list of all the questions that I have for him. He is accustomed to my lists after almost 7 years together. I want to know why he thinks MG is having a temper tantrum, how long he thinks I will have my medications increased and what do I do to make MG behave.

It is not clear to me why I make lists but I have made them all of my adult life. I have to do lists, want lists goals lists, home improvement lists, what to write about on my blog lists, a list of things I need to make a  list for just name it and I probably have a list for it. There is something so totally satisfying about marking off an item on a list. I feel such a sense of accomplishment. I have even made a list after I have done many of the things that I would have written on the list just so that I could mark through the items that I have already finished. (Admit it you have done the same thing!)

When Todd, my son,  was younger I often left him a list of things that I wanted him to do while I was at work. In fact, that is what started my Ily name but that is a story for another day. One day when he was about 14 he called me at work. His first words were, "Mom, what did I do? Am I in trouble?" I was totally confused by that question. He thought that since I left him a list that meant that I was mad at him or that he had done something wrong. I just wanted him to keep busy. I remember my parents and grandparents always saying that "Idle hands are the devil's workshop."  Every time after that when I made a list or left him a list of things to do, it was a standing joke to ask "Am I in trouble?"

“We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies.” 2 Thessalonians 3:11

  1. Lists often make me sad because nothing gets crossed of mine.

  3. Ha! I am a list girl too! I have to have them or I can't keep anything straight, and forget about going to the doctor without one, If I didn't have it I would leave and think of 5 - 10 things I needed to ask him. They see me a mile coming too, there is always the look of acknowledgement and smile when they walk into the room, and then the eyes travel to my lap where the mighty list lay, and then the glance back up to my eyes and either a smirk or a sigh. Thankfully all of my doctors are good advocates and partners in my care so they put up with the lists...without them I would be lost... great post!

  4. I love lists. I make them for everything. If I do something that wasn't on the list, I write it on there so I can cross it off!!
